Dr. James Armstrong Montana, a retired physician, has dedicated his life to healthcare and outdoor pursuits. Born on June 7, 1963, in Danville, Pennsylvania, he was raised in Kalispell, Montana. From an early age, he displayed a passion for athletics, music, and community involvement. His academic journey took him to Princeton University, where he pursued a degree in History while actively participating in various campus activities. He is deeply committed to his family, faith, and Montana's natural beauty, which he embraces through his love for tennis, sailing, skiing, hiking, hunting, and fly fishing.
After completing high school as a three-sport athlete and a member of the Concert Choir at Flathead High School, he attended Princeton University. Following his graduation, he ventured into the field of education, serving as an intern at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. Despite finding fulfillment in teaching, his passion for healthcare led him back to Montana, where he worked as a guide in Glacier Park during the summers and served as a Ski Patrol member on Big Mountain in Whitefish. Additionally, he served as a wilderness intern at the Wilderness Treatment Center, supporting chemically dependent young men.
He pursued his medical education at an esteemed institution, joining the United Church of Christ and Choir in Vermont. He completed his internship at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington, and his residency at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, specializing in Family Medicine. His commitment to serving underserved communities led him to become a health officer for the Indian Health Service in Browning, Montana, for two years. He later joined his father in private practice in Kalispell, Montana, and served as the Chairman of the Family Medicine Department at KRMC.
He worked in Arizona and returned to Kalispell at MedNorth Urgent Care throughout his career. From 2013 to 2020, he served as a full-time physician at CostCare in Missoula, Montana. In addition to his medical work, he found joy in supporting his daughter's high school tennis team as a volunteer assistant coach in 2019. He remained dedicated to family practice and urgent care until his retirement in March 2021.

Following his retirement from full-time medical practice in 2021, he continues to utilize his expertise as an Addictions Coach and outdoor mentor at New Beginning Ranch in Corvallis, Montana. He also serves as an Assistant Property Manager for Bootstrap Ventures, LLC in Missoula, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to making a difference. He recently joined the Edge Life Skills team as Professional Relations Coordinator.
Furthermore, he remains an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Missoula and is involved in various committees, including the Sending and Outreach Committee and Family Promise, FPCM. He is also a member of the Garden City Tennis Association, where his passion for the sport shines through his 4.0 rating in singles and doubles, recently winning the 4.0 Men's Doubles bracket at the Western Montana Open.
